Westerings Primary Academy is a smaller than average school of approximately 201 pupils from age 4 to 11. Originally built for two-form entry, the number to admit was changed to 30 in 2009. The school was initially built in an open plan style but now has various dividing walls and with just one class per year group, the children enjoy plenty of space and resources in a quiet and undisturbed learning environment. The extra room has enabled us to develop zoned areas such as Learning Support rooms, the Children’s Games Room, the Resources room and the Family Room used for Breakfast Club. Other facilities inside the school include the Children’s Kitchen, the ICT Suite that houses 16 networked computers, floor robots, animation and video equipment; the Library and two halls.

The school is set in beautiful and quiet surroundings adjoining Hockley Woods and the children enjoy learning surrounded by wildlife. The extensive grounds allow a range of outdoor facilities, including a sports field, Junior playground, an Infant playground and a designated Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) outdoor area; allotments and a poly-tunnel, play equipment and wildlife gardens. It is commonplace to see sports clubs using the field, classes listening to stories in the amphitheatre or children hunting for mini-beasts in the woodland area or around the pond.

The children at Westerings Primary Academy enjoy a variety of extra-curricular activities to enrich their learning. The Choir performs regularly and there are numerous sports clubs for all interests. These can include Archery, Golf, Fencing, Gymnastics and Karate as well as the competitive sports of Football, Netball and Cross Country Running. All children learn cookery and gardening skills. During the academic year all classes will be involved in performing class assemblies and a production to parent/carers. The younger children perform at Christmas, Years 4 and 5 at Easter and Year 6 in July. Having three productions during the year enables all children to play a part and have a role. Every year the choir enjoys visiting local Care Homes to sing carols and groups of children perform at Southend Cliffs Pavilion, The Freight House and The Royal Albert Hall. The children enjoy organising fundraising events for charities, often initiating and running these events themselves.

In addition to their class, all of the children belong to one of four Family Groups: Squirrels, Badgers, Woodpeckers and Foxes. This allows for children of all ages to work and play together on special occasions and for them to build relationships with younger or older children. It helps with the transition between Infants and Juniors and also adds to the family atmosphere where all staff and children know each other. New Reception children have Year 6 Buddies to look after them when they first enter school; and Year 5 and 6 Playleaders are trained to teach younger children games and co-operation skills.  As a small school, we pride ourselves on knowing all children and the school works well as a cohesive unit. Visitors to the school often comment on the happy atmosphere and the good behaviour and maturity of the pupils. Children feel at ease and are able to learn and progress well.

Our academic results continue to be higher than County and National Averages at the end of EYFS, KS1 and KS2 and children make good and sometimes outstanding progress from their starting points at all stages of their school life.

Westerings Primary Academy was grade ‘Good ‘ in all areas in the Ofsted inspection of April 2012.
