The Duston School is a vibrant establishment with a distinct identity. Everything we do is inspired by our belief that everyone is a learner. At the heart of this learning process is a school community which asks questions, solves problems and makes thoughtful decisions.

We provide a personalised curriculum and a school environment that fosters independent learning and entrepreneurial instinct where all are empowered to reach their educational and personal potential. Our school is one which is committed to sustaining a culture in which all individuals, representing diverse cultures and experiences, look after, care and respect one another.

·         Achievement - Recognising all accomplishments.

·         Care - Exhibiting concern and empathy for others.

·         Community - Working together towards a shared vision.

·         Inclusivity - Embracing and valuing all.

·         Respect - Showing care and courtesy.

There are two words which describe what is unique and fundamental to everything at The Duston School –respect and care. We expect all our young people, staff and parents to demonstrate these qualities in everything that they do. We strongly believe that if we show respect for our students, they in turn will respect us, and together, we can achieve great success.

In June 2009, the Senior Leadership Team won the National Award for Outstanding Leadership and we firmly believe that we are now taking the next steps in our journey to become an outstanding school.

The Duston School is an oversubscribed Foundation Trust Secondary School which is larger than average size and has a thriving sixth form. In 2009 the school became a Specialist College for Business and Enterprise, and Science. It has also gained the prestigious Inclusion Quality Mark, the first school in Northampton to do so, and the Customer Service Excellence Award awarded by The Cabinet Office (Feb 2010).

Recognition of our greatly improved status came in September 2009 when we became Specialist School in Business and Enterprise, and Science. This is an exciting development which will enable the school to raise standards further, more appropriately support the young people's needs in areas that will really make a positive contribution to their lives, and generally help the school to engage more appropriately with its main feeder schools. In addition to this, The Duston School became a Trust School with effect from April 2009 and as a Trust School our aims are:

·         Raising standards for all learners.

·         Raising aspirations for the whole Community at The Duston School as a school, at local and national level.

·         Embracing the learner from 0-19 in particular, in supporting all learners to develop Business and Entrepreneurial skills.

·         Improving the profile of the school.

·         Enhancing skills and expertise through our various Trust Members and external Partners.

The school has now embarked on an era of creativity in that it is beginning to establish sound and professional links with other organisations in order to further raise standards, support the 14-19 agenda and beyond, and also offer more relevant opportunities for the young people so that they are more appropriately prepared for adult life. This really is an exciting time in the life of the school.

We are proud to be a 'CMCD' school (Consistency, Management and Cooperative Discipline). This is a platform which is helping us to improve standards and to change the culture within the school. It helps us to produce 'successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens'.

In our drive to boost standards we have radically re-modelled our KS4 curriculum so that it now closely meets student needs, engaging and motivating our students whose aspirations are being raised so that standards will rise strongly by 2011 as the new model works through. We continue to work hard with our current Year 10 & 11 students so that they achieve well and fulfil potential.

As a new Specialist School we aim to be at the heart of our local community: a vibrant establishment with a distinct identity. We aim to be a centre of excellence which encourages and nurtures both an enterprising and creative culture and an understanding of Science and its application in the 21st century, and to promote a greater understanding of the world and the place of individuals within it. We are striving to develop a culture whereby our learners, whether they be students or adults, are better equipped to acquire the skills and competencies needed to effectively operate within the working and social environment of the future.

We aim to offer personalisation for all within our school - an approach which embraces the aspirations and aptitudes of our young learners in meaningful ways. We will provide interdependent pathways that support flexible learning and ensure that we are developing a sustainable and changeable workforce for the future. We aim to make dynamic advances both within our own school and within our wider community by developing a passion for learning and reflection, and, thereby, allowing personal growth.

Above all else, Duston is sharply focused on driving up standards, raising aspiration, boosting basic skills and personal development and enabling students to develop employability skills and gain the qualifications that will improve life chances and choices. We see ourselves well on the journey to become an outstanding school.

Our strap line is ‘Learn, Achieve, Succeed': Duston is a learning school hungry to achieve and committed to succeeding. Our students get one chance and they deserve the best!
