The Tendring Enterprise Studio School is one of the first of its kind in the United Kingdom and the first to be operated by a partnership between national and local trusts. Studio Schools have been designed to help young learners better prepare for the world of work. They draw on extensive experience from the UK and around the world and bring together a number of proven elements. A Studio school is a new kind of school that will provide young people with qualifications and a full range of skills. It will involve them in working and running businesses and social enterprises by directly serving customers.

Studio Schools are small schools of around 300 students. We teach the national curriculum through interdisciplinary, enterprise-themed projects, but have a very different style and ethos to most existing schools, with a much stronger emphasis on practical work and enterprise. Every student has a personal coach and have many of the features of a workplace (such as booking their holidays). Studio Schools do not aim to replace other secondary schools - but to complement them by providing an alternative approach suitable for young people looking for a more entrepreneurial option or alienated by traditional pedagogy. At the Tendring Enterprise Studio School we offer places to students from across the Tendring area from Years 10-13. There are approximately 75 places in each year group and classes are small with approximately 15 students per group.

As a school which has a distinct entrepreneurial culture, we particularly aim to attract learning and personal coaches with business backgrounds and careers from outside the classroom as well as within it. At all times, we strive to ensure learning is related to the real world and its relevance for the future made clear. Much of the curriculum is delivered thorough project based learning  with visits, employer challenges, competitions and input from local employers forming an integral part.

Our students are each assigned a personal coach and are nurtured as individuals to meet the challenges of the 21st Century. They are encouraged to innovate, create and develop a skill set which encourages leadership, team work and problem solving. We aim to strike a balance between hard work and enjoyment, encouraging students to take ownership of their own learning goals, time management and emotional intelligence. Self-reflection and personal evaluation is built into the timetable.

Our teaching environment includes three creative learning areas designed for project based learning and these and all teaching spaces are equipped with the latest technology. All students are given a portable IT device and teaching includes the use of social networking and iBooks along with a range of dedicated educational apps.

Fostering successful partnerships is an important aspiration for the school and parent participation and community support are encouraged to help create an exciting and entrepreneurial provision within the area.
